“When I probably should have learned, or come to accept, ideas of community, I think I was observing them, but always like an anthropologist, because I wasn’t part of any of these communities. I think it’s similar to how some people end up in the arts: you trace it back and they had a childhood illness—something that made them shut off during a crucial development period. I didn’t have that, but instead I had this weird thing which made me turn to movies and books and records to find a community in there.”
